DENSON-BAARTZ QUARTET (Brisbane) – Debut /CD Dark Sky
This relatively new group is co-led by pianist Louise Denson and alto saxophonist Martha Baartz, two of the most prominent women in Australian jazz. Their new album, Dark Sky, feature all original compositions by the co-leaders. Recorded live at the Brisbane International Jazz Festival 2017 at the Brisbane Multicultural Centre, the music is full of invention, diversity and - above all – genuine “mood” (created through its musical finesse). Originally from Canada, Denson has been working as a lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium for over 20 years and has produced four albums there with her LDG ensemble since 1996. Baartz is well-known on Melbourne and Brisbane’s music scene, having worked in Melbourne with the Baartz-Freeman Sextet before moving back to the Byron Bay area where she is currently teaching saxophone at Southern Cross University, Lismore campus, and is one of the 1st call saxophonists from Brisbane to the Northern Rivers. Their group features well-known and respected bassist Helen Russell, together with ‘young gun’ drummer Aaron Jansz. The album, Dark Sky, was recorded by Mark Smith of Real Productions, and was released under the Pinnacles Music label.
